Oral Prophylaxis: Healthy Mouth Cleaning
A prophylaxis cleaning is a preventive cleaning to help keep your teeth and gums healthy. For patients who regularly come in for their visits, this is the usual type of cleaning they get. In such cases, there is very little amount of plaque and barely any deposits seen in the mouth.
Full Mouth Debridement
Full mouth debridement or FMD is usually done in cases when there is a lot of plaque buildup and calcular deposits above and below the gum line. This is most likely due to poor oral hygiene. In this procedure, preliminary removal of plaque and calculus is done so proper exam and diagnosis can be achieved.
Scaling and Root Planing
For patients with gum recession and deep pockets, periodontal scaling and root planing is recommended to remove underlying deposits. This procedure is usually done per quadrant and it involves deep scaling with the use of chemical irrigation to flush out debris. After this procedure, the patient is recommended to undergo a periodontal maintenance program, in which he/she will have to come 4 times a year to keep their teeth and gums healthy.
